• Graduate Minors

  • In keeping with the university’s commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and collaboration, The New School now offers graduate minors. These structured study pathways immerse students in disciplines outside of their primary field and expose them to new ideas and alternative modes of research and practice. They broadening students’ skills and expanding their career options.

    Graduate minors are made up of three courses, for a total of 9 credits. Students can choose to acquire foundational knowledge in a single discipline, such as economics or design studies; investigate emerging interdisciplinary issues, such as migration and capitalism; or develop professional capacities in areas including entrepreneurship and digital storytelling.

    Note: The New School for Social Research also offers a specialized minor in Historical Studies, open only to students pursuing a PhD in Politics or Sociology.

    Eligibility

    Graduate minors are available to all graduate students at The New School, although some minors are closed to students in specific programs. Graduate minors consist of three courses, for a total of 9 credits. Academic advisors can help select and declare a graduate minor and chart a curriculum that satisfies both degree and minor requirements.

    The curricula of most master’s and PhD programs at The New School for Social Research have at least 9 credits of elective space. However, students in the Philosophy MA and Psychology MA programs should consult with an advisor early on to determine how they can dedicate the necessary three elective courses toward completing a graduate minor.
