CULTURE as a guide to ACTIVATE PUBLIC SPACES by the means of COLOR ENHANCED BY LIGHT

Public spaces are crucial areas for lighting designers to address. These zones have to be thought of as “outside living rooms‚” that will embrace people’s heritage and enliven their uniqueness to engage its users. In this thesis proposal, the Plaza de Armas in Old San Juan, PR performs an abstraction of the play Los Soles Truncos (Truncated Suns) to reconnect its history and culture to the site by creating a modulation of light intensities and color temperatures on the vibrant facades. The piece uses light to enlighten an historic public space, invigorating social interaction and inviting people to stay. The light brings back Puerto Rican culture, revives and celebrates it.
