Quilian Riano is a designer, writer, researcher and part-time faculty member of the School of Design Strategies at Parsons, The New School for Design. Quilian teaches design studios at Parsons The New School for Design in the undergraduate and graduate programs of the School of Design Strategies and at Pratt Institute’s Programs for Sustainable Planning and Development. Quilian has also taught architectural, urban and transdisciplinary design studios at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and the City College of New York. Quilian attended University of Florida for a Bachelors of Design (BDes) in Architecture and Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design for a Masters of Architecture (MArch).
Quilian founded DSGN AGNC and is its principal. DSGN AGNC (Design Agency) is a collaborative design/research studio exploring political engagement through architecture, urbanism, art & activism. In practice and academia, Quilian works with community groups and trans-disciplinary teams to create engagement projects and comprehensive research that can be used to propose a variety of targeted policies, actions, and designs that seek to increase agency at various scales — from games to pamphlets to structures and landscapes. Quilian has recently received the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise as well as awards and residencies from the Institute for Public Architecture, The Storefront for Art and Architecture, Boston Society of Architects, Harvard University, and the Queens Museum. Quilian's work with DSGN AGNC has been featured at the Venice Biennale, Harvard University, the World Urban Forum, Cornell University, New York’s Center for Architecture, The Van Alen Institute, Parsons The New School for Design, The Queens Museum, The Austrian Cultural Forum, Boston Society of Architects, among others.
