This course will introduce students to the basic theories and practices of photorealistic and stylized lighting and rendering in a virtual environment. A variety of techniques will be used to teach students how to better see and understand light. Students will also learn to manipulate their images using a compositing package to achieve greater control and flexibility over their final output. Topics covered will include lighting history; traditional photography/film set-ups; creating photorealistic textures and materials; shadows; UV texture mapping; procedural texturing; rendering in passes; depth of field; raytracing and global illumination; high dynamic range imaging; basic MEL scripting to introduce dynamics will be covered.
