• Employment
  • Employment is work, paid or unpaid, that takes place within the United States.

Depending on your status and program of study, you may be eligible for the various types of employment opportunities while you study in the United States, including:

    • On-campus jobs
    • Off-campus internships during your program of study (curricular practical training)
    • Off-campus employment after your program ends (optional practical training)
    • Academic training during or after your program (for J-1 students)
    • Entrepreneurship (starting your own business)
    • Employment with international organizations

Remember that the U.S. government takes working without authorization very seriously. Unauthorized employment could negatively affect your future benefits in the United States. Always err on the side of caution when it comes to engaging in an activity that could be viewed as employment.

If you are not sure whether an activity counts as employment or have any doubts about your employment authorization, speak with an ISSS advisor first.
