• The New School’s Office of University Trademarks was formed to protect and license the university’s marks around the world. Those who wish to use the university’s identifying trademarks on commercial products must obtain permission from the Office of University Trademarks. By licensing commercial products with the university’s marks, The New School seeks to promote the New School brand throughout the world. Trademark licensing allows the university to connect the brand with leaders, manufacturers, collaborators, and retail partners, creating opportunities to bring to market distinctive offerings that provide innovative experiences to learners and consumers.

In addition to merchandise licensing, the Office of University Trademarks serves as a resource for The New School’s campus community. The office manages the filing and maintenance of The New School’s trademark registration and serves as the contact point for general trademark registration inquiries and requests. These activities are handled in cooperation with the Office of the General Counsel.

    Mission Statement

The purpose of the Office of University Trademarks is to protect and license the university’s marks around the world.

The university owns the name New School and any other mark, logo, insignia, seal, crest, design, symbol or any combination of these that has come to be associated with the university, but not limited to those registered marks (Marks). The use of the university Marks requires the permission of the Office of University Trademarks. Please note that the university's Brand Guidelines and the requirements of our Marketing Office must still be followed. The university reserves the right to modify this policy at any time; determinations shall be made by the Office of University Trademarks.

Through the licensing of the university’s Marks, we respond to problems in society that call for innovative, creative, and sustainable solutions, informed by design excellence and engaging with the public. Additionally, we seek to achieve outcomes that promote the democratization of design. Through our Trademark and Licensing Programs, we collaborate with licensing partners in the development of broadly accessible, progressive design offerings that extend the university brand beyond the walls of Parsons, one of the world’s top-ranked design schools. The Trademark and Licensing Programs’ aim is to democratize design, strengthening its role in everyday life and enabling people to apply their creative skills to improve the world.

We license the rights to use the university’s name and Marks as a guarantee of origin and a stamp of outstanding quality. The Trademark and Licensing Programs ensure that the university name and trademarks are used appropriately, in good taste, and in compliance with the university’s standards.

The university monitors the use of its Marks and ensures that branding and use policies are being followed. The Trademark and Licensing Programs are designed to:

    • Protect the university’s name and reputation
    • Promote the university through licensed products and other licensing arrangements
    • Preserve the university’s history by protecting historically significant and otherwise important trademarks
