• New York City is beautiful (Central Park in the spring? Unbeatable). But it can get crowded and loud and exhausting, especially during the holidays (Rockefeller Center in December? Miserable). We provide monthly escapes from the bustle every month. Join us on the slopes, on mountain hikes, in apple orchards, or around the campfire, and meet your fellow Narwhals! We also provide ample opportunities to develop new skills, like archery and rock climbing.

    To stay up-to-date on upcoming excursions, be sure to bookmark this page as well as our marketplace, where you can reserve your spot! Reservations are a must. And before embarkment, be sure to fill out a waiver. Then you're all set. Stay active

    All of our events can be found on Narwhal Nation. Note that RSVPs on Narwhal Nation do not ensure you a seat; you must purchase your tickets through our marketplace to reserve your spot.

    Requests for refunds must be received five business days before the trip date. No refunds are available on deposit classes and overnight trips.

    Summit Series

    The Summit Series is a series of hikes led by Recreation around the New York and New Jersey area. These hikes are the perfect quick getaways. Hop on the bus and join us on the trail!

    Summit Series #1: Storm King
    September 8
    Departure 8 am; return 5pm
    $25.00 for New School students and guests.

    Hike to Storm King Mountain, a moderate 2.3-mile hike with steep climbs and gorgeous views of the Hudson River. We will visit the Storm King Art Center after this quick two- to three-hour hike. Your ticket includes admission and a docent tour.

    Summit Series #2 Breakneck Ridge
    October 7
    Departure 9 am; return 2:30 pm
    $20.00 for New School students and guests, includes round-trip transportation and guide.

    Breakneck Ridge is a 4.1-mile loop trail and arguably one of the best hikes in New York City's backyard. It's a short but difficult hike with beautiful views. Come find out why the steep climb to the top is worth it!

    Outdoor Bouldering at The Cliffs at DUMBO
    Wednesday, September 12, 7:30 pm
    $5.00 for New School students; $10.00 for guests.

    Come boulder outside while the weather is good. Join us at The Cliffs at DUMBO, located underneath the iconic Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Take in some views and practice your bouldering skills.

    ELEV8: Music, Movement, Community
    September 15, 12-5pm
    Free, open only to New School students, faculty, and staff.

    The ELEV8 experience provides a sober and inspiring space for connection, conscious celebration, open communication, and community co-creation across interests and identities.

    The intention is to offer an alternative community experience in the city in which students can engage with themselves and one another in a healthy, empowering, and vibrant way. This Ecstatic Dance experience will offer students an opportunity to learn nonverbal communication and expression through embodiment (as through yoga and free-form movement while providing a safe space for open and enlightening discussion on crucial university life topics (like consent and self-care practices). In addition, this experience will invite students to see the way in which art (both movement-oriented art and activations, such as a collective mural can offer them individual mental, physical, and emotional support in a nourishing community environment. This is a convergence of New School students and artists across arts, activism, and wellness spaces.

    Narwhals' Night Out at Harriman State Park: Backpacking 101
    September 21 through 23
    $100.00, includes all meals, gear, round-trip transportation, hikes, and canoe rentals.

    Walk, climb, and wander all over the historic Appalachian Trail. Guided by the Appalachian Mountain Climb, New School students can experience a full weekend of outdoor adventure fun. We will depart on September 21, and return on September 23, leaving plenty of time to backpack on the trail and canoe on the lake. Join your fellow Narwhals and leave the hustle and bustle behind for the weekend. Bring a good book, sturdy shoes, and a spirit of adventure and join us!

    All overnight trips require a pre-trip meeting, to be arranged at a later date. This trip is open to New School students only.

    Pop-Up Fitness

    Pop-Up Fitness is a short-term series of group fitness classes taught by our very own instructors or instructors from area gyms. Pop-Up Fitness allows students to try out new classes for the first time. Got an idea for a Pop-Up Fitness class? Send recreation@newschool.edu an email, and your class idea may be featured next semester.

    Pop-Up Fitness: BollyX Dance Class
    September 14 and September 20 at 8pm

    Come unleash your inner rock star in the midst of this bustling city. This high-intensity interval training, fueled by Bollywood music, will give you a total body workout in just 50 minutes. By combining cardio-intensive exercises with Bollywood and Bhangra beats, BollyX is defining healthy living in a whole new way. Check out their YouTube channel for a sneak peek.

    Pop-Up Fitness: Meditation Workshop
    November 30, 8pm, and December 1, 12 pm
    $5.00 deposit, refunded if you attend open to students, faculty, staff, and guests.

    Set aside some time for quiet reflection and meditation. Instructor David Kaplan will lead a meditation workshop composed of light stretching and breathing exercises.

    Skyline Kayaking on the Hudson
    September 16, 5:10-6:30 pm
    $25.00 for New School students and guests.

    Enjoy eye-popping panoramic views of Manhattan's famous skyline. This is the best choice for mixed groups with little or no experience. Your guide will teach you paddle strokes and safety protocols on land for 15 minutes; you will then paddle stable sit-on-top kayaks for 45 minutes. Wear water-friendly bottoms and bring your camera. This is a beginner-level activity; no kayaking or swimming experience is required.

    Yankees Versus Boston
    September 20, 7pm
    $15.00 for students; $20.00 for faculty, staff, and guests.

    Enjoy a day at the ballpark and watch one of the most exciting rivalries in baseball play out at Yankee Stadium. Discounted tickets for all students include a free hot dog and 12-ounce soda.

    Bike Maintenance Workshops by BIKENYC
    September 25, 6-8pm, and September 26, 6-8pm

    Learn how to take care of your own bike at our bike maintenance workshops. Bike New York envisions a vibrant, healthy, green city with more people riding bicycles. Knowing how to repair your bike is an important part of making biking practical, safe, and fun. Join us for an evening at the shop, and learn how to fix a flat and do an ABC safety check on your bike. At the end of the class, you will receive a patch kit and multi-tool to get you started making basic repairs and adjustments on your bike. To learn more about our work, visit bike.nyc.

    Let's make images together! Join Kodak, Michael Turek, and Arc'teryx Soho for a photo walk through Manhattan. Bring your 35mm, your phone, or other device. You'll learn techniques for shooting double-exposure photography, coming up with successful photo compositions, and shooting at nighttime. Don't forget your tripod! Meet at Arc'teryx Soho, 104 Greene Street, New York. Hosted by Michael Turek. Michael Turek is an award-winning professional photographer based in New York City and London.
