• Searching for an apartment or a short-term housing option in NYC and unsure about where to begin? We've provided some tips and resources to help you with this process. On this page you will find some helpful links that will help you begin your search and know what to avoid, maps of neighborhoods near The New School, and resources that will help you find a roommate or an apartment.

Be advised that evening and weekend L train service between Eighth Avenue in Manhattan and Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn will be operating on a reduced schedule through summer 2020. To mitigate the effects of this reduced service, the MTA is offering expanded subway service on neighboring lines, additional bus service and other alternatives.

If this closure will affect your commute to and from campus during evenings and weekends, consult this guide for information about alternative transportation. We expect increased travel times for students who live along the L train line and along the alternative routes outlined by the MTA. Keep this situation in mind if you are currently searching for off-campus housing.

When conducting your search, please be aware of scams, do not send money before viewing an apartment, and be careful about the information you provide.

  • Resources and Tips

When searching for an apartment, start with an idea of what you are able to spend and create a budget that includes rent, utilities, transportation, food, and any other expenses you may have. Next, identify what you will need in order to qualify to rent, rent to buy, or buy an apartment. Most landlords will require a guarantor when you sign a lease.

One of the best ways to gather information on rentals is to connect with other New School students who are also searching or currently have an open space in their apartment. Posting to your Facebook groups can be helpful in finding rooms for rent or others who are looking for roommates.
