• The New School dining program prides itself on serving chef-created, diverse, healthful foods. Its mission is to provide real farm-to-table food that promotes the health of our students, community, and planet. You can learn more about our program by visiting the New School Dining website.

Given the great diversity of tastes, cultures, and class schedules, New School students' eating patterns generally do not fit the traditional meal plan model that encourages eating a full meal on campus at set intervals three times a day. Our location in Greenwich Village, the heart of New York City, further fuels our students’ desire for more flexible dining plans, as they choose to eat around the neighborhood more frequently rather than be compelled by an all-inclusive meal plan to eat all meals on campus.

That is why we’ve implemented a variety of declining balance plans, which are not designed to provide any specific number of meals per week or to promote exclusively on-campus dining. Each plan includes Dining Dollars, which can be spent in the on-campus dining commons, and Dining Dollars Plus, which can be spent both on campus and at off-campus merchant partners, giving students even more flexibility. Purchases made in the cafeteria with Dining Dollars and Dining Dollars Plus are exempt from the 8.875 percent NYC sales tax, helping stretch your dollar further. Although plans are billed per semester, students or parents may add funds to the account at any time.

    On-Campus Resident Auto Enrollment

All first-time freshmen living in student housing will have a mandatory dining plan for both semesters of their first year (two semesters). First-year students will be automatically enrolled in the Flex plan but may opt for the Fixed plan if they prefer.

All other students in campus housing will also be automatically enrolled in the Flex plan but may elect to participate in any of the three dining plans or opt out of the dining plan program entirely.

If you do not live in student housing, you can still enjoy the benefits of having a dining plan by simply opting in to one of the available packages. Elect to opt in, participate in an alternative plan, or opt out entirely using the Change Your Dining Plan option located in your my.newschool.edu Services tab.

The deadline for making changes to your dining plan selection for spring 2020 is February 4, 2020. You are limited to one change or election per semester. Dining plan selection is applicable to the current semester only. An election or change must be submitted at the beginning of each semester.

Any money left in your Dining Dollars and Dining Dollars Plus accounts at the end of the fall semester will roll forward to the spring semester, but balances remaining at the end of the spring semester are forfeited. The last day of cafeteria services for fall 2019 is Monday, December 16, 2019, and for spring 2020 is Monday, May 11, 2020.

    Exemption Requests

If you would like to request an exemption from the meal plan because of illness or disability, submit your documentation to Student Disability Services. If you would like to request an exemption for religious reasons, contact Campus Card Services. Requests must be made by October 1 for fall semester exemptions and by February 1 for spring semester exemptions. Exemption requests submitted after these deadlines will not be considered.

Questions about payment of fees and refunds should be submitted to Student Financial Services.
