In the video "Mouth Filled Ash," Margarita Sanchez Urdaneta uses text, sound, installation, and other tools in an ongoing investigation of the politics of mourning in her native country, Colombia. Her concerns lie in how accounts of forced disappearances, mass graves and terror tactics are obtained and framed. Through her work, she reflects upon how these constructed and mediated narratives cease to be accounts and shift into fiction; accounts that construct or re-constitute a reality that even as fiction most people do not want to face. These fictitious rewritten accounts are presented as a series of movie subtitles on a black frame, subtitles of a nonexistent image, of a nonexistent recording. These fragmented fictions will forever be incomplete, narrations that will not and cannot account for the violent event. Furthermore, the images in the work point to places and subjects/objects in which other sets of inactive fictions develop.
