I'm Everything I am Because You Loved Me

I'm Everything I am Because You Loved Me

I am an interdisciplinary multimedia artist, musician, and writer who is guided by intuition to create work that articulates a throughline between generational trauma, heritable psychopathology, and societal structures of power and control. My work opens up pockets of resilience, innovation, imagination, and joy within the Black community that break free from the cycle of violence perpetuated against us.

My thesis piece is a tribute to my late grandmother, Naomi Thompson (d. 2019). She was beloved by everyone who met her and always encouraged me to follow my dreams. I channel diasporic methods of ornamentation, decoration, and interior design to weave together memory, family history, grief, trauma, and societal constructs. These elements serve as a backdrop to a sculptural portrait of my Grandma. She is depicted as a saint who shines a light through the darkness, symbolizing the significance, strength, and power of Black matriarchs. I employ a spectrum of media, including textiles, embroidery, collage, quilting, sculpture, painting, stained glass, glass fusion, embellishments, musical composition, and digital illustration. The piece is meant to be experienced in tandem with this playlist: rb.gy/uw3dmj.
