Profile
Maurits Montañez is the Associate Director of the BBA Strategic Design and Management program at Parsons Paris. Born in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, Maurits is a software engineer, designer, educator, and entrepreneur who works at the intersection of culture, technology, and design to create new ways to promote art and culture, nurture creative skills, and drive change toward desirable futures. Inside and outside the classroom, he inspires students to put their passion for purpose-driven design into action with the tools of creative entrepreneurship, design strategy, and futures making.
In 2010, he founded Manuvo, a company that helps professionals in the cultural and creative industries use the power of culture to tackle the world’s biggest problems. Since then, Manuvo's projects have been featured in the New York Times, CNN and Deutsche Welle; and has been awarded multiple international awards, including Salvador Allende Presidential Medal (Chile, 2017), Most Innovative Company in Latin America by Inter-American Development Bank in 2016, Most Innovative Startup in Mexico by UK Trade and Investment, Digital Humanities Award in 2015, and Best Design Award by The Next Web in 2012.
Throughout his career, Maurits has participated in diverse startup acceleration programs in Silicon Valley, California; Vancouver, Canada; Bogota Colombia; Mexico City, Mexico; London, England; and Avignon, France. He has also been a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator at the International Book Fair in Frankfurt, Germany, BookExpo America in New York City, and The Next Web conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Maurits holds a BS in Computer Science from National Technology Institute of Mexico and an MS in Strategic Design and Management from Parsons School of Design (Global Exec). He also has certifications in Design Thinking (Stanford University), Storytelling (IDEO U), Experience Design (College of Extraordinary Experiences), Artificial Intelligence (Udacity), and Teaching Knowledge (Cambridge University).
Maurits has been featured on The New School’s Design Goes Global campaign, Samsung’s ad The Future of Mexico, the TV special Global Mexico, and the magazine 50 Most Remarkable Personalities in Avignon, France.
In 2016, the MIT Technology Review named Maurits to its list of Innovators Under 35, an honor given to young innovators at the vanguard of technology finding solutions to global problems.
