The Center for English Language Studies (CELS) consults on best practices for internationalizing the university, from supporting individual students to working with staff and faculty to implementing programs abroad. The center’s activities include:

  • Adapting informational and promotional material to make it more linguistically accessible
  • Recommending proficiency requirements and policy for programs across the university
  • Working with advisors and faculty to respond to students struggling with language proficiency issues

Curriculum Design

The CELS works in collaboration with program leadership to design curricular responses to particular needs and challenges related to linguistically and culturally diverse students. Curriculum development projects include:

  • The Language-Supported Pathway in Parsons’ First Year Curriculum
  • Language-Supported Recitation Sections for the Design for the Century lecture course in the MFA Design and Technology program
  • Teaching strategy training for Teaching Fellows leading Design and Technology Bootcamp and Academic Language and Culture orientation for new international students in the bootcamp
  • Customized Pre-College English Language Intensive Courses
