    • Creating stories to be performed on stage and on camera requires equal parts artistry and craft. At the School of Drama, writing students work closely with our award-winning faculty to discover their authentic voice while learning how to construct dramatic narratives that are compelling, insightful, honest and provocative. Beyond the classroom, writers continue their training as both dramatists and collaborative artists through the practical, hands-on experience of developing original scripts in rehearsal and production.

Combine your passion with inspirational training to prepare for a professional career as a skilled dramatic writer in theater, film, and television. Explore emotional and behavioral truth, and develop an awareness and understanding of the range and depth of human experiences. Become a citizen artist, fusing writing, directing, and acting together, while also exploring contemporary issues related to social justice.

Playwriting students train with some of the most highly accomplished dramatists in the country. These faculty will become your mentors, sharing their extensive expertise in all types of media and their first-hand knowledge of the current professional landscape.

As a BFA student, you will hone your writing craft and artistic vision by taking foundation courses in playwriting, as well as in acting, directing, and creative technologies, making you a more well-rounded dramatic artist. Chart your own course by choosing electives based on your interests, gaining knowledge and inspiration from courses in the liberal arts, design, media, entrepreneurship, and more from across The New School's colleges.

At the MFA level, explore the intersections between dramatic writing, acting, and directing alongside a selective cohort of passionate peers, working in traditional and experimental forms.  Build your portfolio of produced pieces, including 10-minute plays, one-acts and full-lengths. As a part of the MFA program, you will also complete a screenplay, an original television pilot, and write a short film which will be produced in your final semester.
