Program Description
The spring 2025 semester will run from January 21 to May 17. All courses will be offered online with live Zoom sessions.
The New School's Certificate in Teaching English (CTE) program offers a path into a field of growing opportunity for students passionate about cross-cultural exchange, languages, teaching, travel, and community engagement. A leader in Teaching English
to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) training for more than 25 years, we've refined our certificate-level training to give our students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in adult education programs, nonprofits, private language schools
and tutoring centers, businesses, libraries, and community colleges.
The certificate is designed for aspiring and working ESL teachers, as well as professionals looking to gain skills working with international and multilingual populations. The five-course curriculum has a practical orientation based on the theory and techniques of communicative, student-centered, culturally sensitive teaching. This program equips you with skills readily applicable to classroom teaching and tutoring here and abroad, where the demand for English language teachers has never been greater. As the ability to teach online has become essential now, techniques in teaching ESL online as well as on-site will be covered.
Our certificate program includes weekly live Zoom classes, as well as numerous opportunities for in-person volunteer teaching that allow you to apply your skills in a real classroom setting. Students can take courses on a noncredit basis, and matriculated students at The New School can take courses for undergraduate credit to earn the CTE while completing their degree. Please note that this program does not certify teachers for New York public
schools.
