The New School for Social Research

Since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Jessica Pisano has been studying the ways in which Ukrainian democracy has survived while under siege from Russia. Pisano has been in constant contact with colleagues and students at the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv University in Ukraine, developing an understanding of the war by learning about the experiences of fellow scholars. She also facilitated the delivery of laptops to the university through the New University in Exile Consortium, an organization that follows the tradition of The New School’s original University in Exile, established by President Alvin Johnson in 1933. Today members of the New University in Exile Consortium are hosting more than 150 exiled scholars from 24 countries.

Pisano’s research in real time aligns with one of the primary goals of The New School for Social Research: to understand the complex issues facing the world today through intensive engagement with the people most directly affected by them.
