Mariah’s professional work is a mix of studio practice, academic research and teaching, carefully woven and intermixed such that each component feeds and supports the others. She has a studio practice based in photography that includes collage work combining printmaking, drawing and photographs and has recently been included in exhibitions at The Douro Museum, Alijo, Portugal, The Danforth Museum Framingham, MA and the Midwest Center for Photography, Wichita, KS. Mariah’s writing centers on issues of assessment and self-assessment with recent publications including “Is The Critique Relevant?” In Visual Inquiry; Learning and Teaching Art, a chapter titled “Re-thinking Critique: Questioning the Standards, Re-thinking the Format, Engaging Meanings Constructed in Context”, in Clapp, E. (Ed), 20 Under 40: Re-Inventing the Arts and Arts Education for the 21st Century. She has presented papers at the International Journal of Design Education Conference, College Art Association, Society of Photographic Educators and the Lilly International Conference for Teaching and Learning. Mariah has a Doctorate in the College Teaching of Art from Columbia University, an MFA in photography from Pratt Institute and a BA in Architecture and Urban Studies from Bryn Mawr College. She has taught courses on pedagogy, Master’s Thesis, photography and cross-disciplinary studio/seminar courses in art and design at Parsons, SUNY Purchase and SUNY Albany, Columbia University and Central Michigan University.
