    Profile

Lenore Malen is an artist and writer who uses the lens of history and humor to explore utopian longings and the sciences and technologies that inform them.  Working across diverse media, including photography, video, installation and performance, she has explored such subjects as Mesmerism, the social structure of idea and imaginary communities, and recently she has re-imagined human culture as a hive in a three channel installation. From 2000-2013 she exhibited and performed at Apex Art, NY, Participant Inc., NY, Location One, NY, Art in General, NY, Skidmore College, NY, Slought Foundation, NY, Tufts University, Medford, Mass. Wesleyan University, Middletown, Ct. Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs NY, The Cue Art Foundation, NY, and The Mediations Biennale, Poznan, Poland.  She performed for the BBC as Doctor Mesmer in Miriam Margolyes’ television production “Dickens in America.” Malen served two terms as editor of Art Journal (published by the College Art Association) from 1990-1996.  In the 1980s she was an editor at Chanticleer Press, NY. As a critic she has written for Art in America, Art News, Arts Magazine, M/E/A/N/I/N/G and The Brooklyn Rail. Her book “The New Society for University Harmony” was published by Granary Books in 2005. She is the recipient of numerous awards including a NYFA Grant in Interdisciplinary Art (2009) and a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2009). She is currently at work on an installation and evening length performance inspired by a 15th century manuscript illumination of Eden. This work titled “The Universal Availability Of All Things Past,” views Eden as a cautionary tale made newly relevant by the ticking clock of climate change, habitat loss and extinction.
