  • Kimberly Connerton

    Profile:

    Dr. Connerton lectures in architecture, design and art history. She is a writer, installation artist, critic and interdisciplinary practioner. Her research focuses on installation art history and architectural history from the 1960s to the 21st century, design solutions that increase inclusion and celebrate diversity, immigration, asylum seekers, boycotts in art and architecture biennials and a critique of the most effective tactics employed to create change inside the disciplines of architecture and art and beyond in the political, economic, social and humanitarian realms.

    As an artist situated in architecture and design, she implements the necessity of extending the role of the artist and the architect to include: a cross-disciplinary pedagocial approach, writing and publishing, public speaking, and a constant engagement with meaningful and imminent problems such as the treatment and transience of immigrants, from the art and aesthetic and architectural perspectives to discover poetic, systematic solutions that are innovative and generate questions that may not have been asked previously.

    Her trajectory is to discover unclaimed power that artists, designers and architects can harness and assert to transform and re-assert our humanity back into the worlds artists, designers and architects create - in the world. 

    Outcomes in her work include social, public and unsolicited text based art installations in New York city that state phrases, ask questions, and quote lines of poetry - her own and international poets that suggest our connection with other human beings and the human desire to find a home/paradise/inner peace.

    She has taught extensively across the disciplines of architecture, art, and design, history & theory and studio, undergraduate and graduate courses at Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, San Francisco Art Institute, Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, University of Technology, Sydney and University of New South Wales, Sydney.

    ​Kimberly completed her PhD by dissertation, titled, Exposure: Self-Portraiture, Performativity, Self-Inquiry
    and studio practice, performative video and photographic installations at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney in 2010.

    She has exhibited her installations and public art in New York, Brooklyn, Sydney, Madrid, London, Toronto, and Melbourne. She has written reviews of museum exhibitions in New York for Aesthetica Magazine, speaks at architecture and art conferences and publishes in architectural books and journals.
