    Sarah Hasted

    Profile

For more than 30 years, Hasted has been known for her innovative promotion and appreciation of contemporary art and artists. She works with clients to develop photography and contemporary art collections worldwide. Hasted collaborates with both emerging and established artists conceptualizing and manifesting work and projects. She strategizes careers as well as working with the artist on positioning, she is based in NEW YORK, SANTA FE and GERMANY.

Breaking from the traditional gallery model to better promote the artists she believes in, Sarah Hasted founded International Art Advisory LLC in 2015. International Art Advisory represents artists from across the globe. Not being tethered to a brick and mortar situation frees Hasted to travel internationally and constantly discover new talent and work with her favorite seasoned artists and clients. Hasted currently represents the work of Parsons alumni, Micaiah Carter, David Kimball Anderson, Manuel Knapp, MarieVic, and Will Wilson. She is extremely dedicated to the support and promotion of her talented former students and alumni from Parsons School of Design, building, strategizing and accelerating their careers.

In 2005, Hasted was one of the founding partners of her own public gallery, Hasted Hunt in New York. In the middle of the economic recession, she took a risk and relocated her gallery to a prestigious ground floor location on 24th Street in the heart of New York’s art world in Chelsea, in 2009. For 10 years, she coordinated local and international exhibitions of the gallery’s artists, presenting early shows by Jean-Paul Goude, Albert Watson, Martin Schoeller, Erwin Olaf, Pierre Gonnord, Kim Dong Yoo. She discovered and nurtured the artistic talents of Awol ErizkuPaolo Ventura and Andreas Gefeller in her gallery, and gave them all their very first exhibitions in the U.S. and New York.

Working closely with each artist to place works in collections, edit and curate exhibitions, secure, edit and promote monographs and publications for each one. They all receive much critical acclaim and coverage in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, Photo District News, Paper Magazine, The Daily Mail, Surface, The Guardian, The International New York Times, ArtForum, The Art Newspaper Fortune Magazine , The Art Economist, Artforum, Harper’s Bazaar, Modern Painters, New York Daily News, New York Observer, The Wall Street Journal, and Time.

She has consulted for many private collectors and has placed artwork with numerous major museums and corporate collections, including consistently facilitating museum exhibitions for its artists and placing their work in such esteemed institutions as the Brooklyn Museum, FLAG Art Foundation, JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Milwaukee Art Museum, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Canada, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, North Carolina Museum of Art, Rockefeller Foundation, Samsung Museum of Art, The Library of Congress, The Margulies Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of the Netherlands, Rijksmuseum, The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, and the West Collection.

Regarded as a showcase for emerging international talent and established artists, Hasted’s gallery became a highly recognized venue for contemporary art worldwide, and was home to singular, pioneering exhibitions and has helped foster the careers of some of the most original, wide-ranging, and international artists working today. The gallery’s artists were featured on Thirteen’s Sunday Arts, the BBC series “The Genius of Photography.” The artists she worked with were regularly recognized for their outstanding achievements by the National Endowment for the Arts, Prix Pictet, Ford Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, the TED Prize, Deutsche Borse, W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, and won many prestigious prizes such as The Johannes Vermeer Prize, Cannes Silver Lion Award, Grammy, Lucie, and The Royal Photographic Society’ Centenary Medal, among others.

Hasted received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography in 1991. Following her undergraduate studies, she held positions in prominent New York City galleries for 10 years, where Hasted created and developed an entire photography department with her colleague, W.M. Hunt, acquiring the exclusive representation of all of the artists, including negotiating worldwide exclusivity.

She has been a Part-time Assistant Professor at the Parsons School of Design since 2003 in the BFA and MFA departments. For the past 20 years she has taught, championed, employed, mentored and strategized with alumni from Parsons, as well as curating the 10 year alumni MFA exhibition in 2015 at the Kellen Gallery at Parsons School of Design, with her colleague, Joseph Wolin.

Elected in 2017, Hasted serves as President of the Board of the theater arts program for urban youth, Moving Mountains Theater Company. She received an award from Moving Mountains in 2014 for her contributions to her community.
