    Angela Shankar

    Profile

    A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Angela is an active performer and educator in New York City.

    In addition to performing regularly with The Chelsea Symphony, Angela is a member of chamber ensembles Reeds Amis and Trio Kalos. Kalos reunited in Boston and New York for a series of performances this past August after two tours in Sweden (2012, 2014) with Ensemble Evolution as part of the Double It Tour and the Midnight Sun Music Festival. The International Double Reed Society invited Reeds Amis to present and perform the unpublished works of Fernande Decruck in Tokyo at the IDRS Conference in August 2015. Angela recently performed the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto with The Chelsea Symphony during their 10th anniversary season. In May 2012, Angela premiered “Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra,” dedicated to her by composer Seth Bedford, with The Chelsea Symphony.

    You can see and hear Angela on Amazon Prime's Golden Globe winning television series, Mozart in the Jungle. She appears as an orchestra member in several episodes in Season 2 and Season 3 and you can hear Angela perform an excerpt from Messiaen's Abîme des oiseaux from Quartet for the End of Time in Episode 7 of Season 3.

    A passionate music education advocate and teacher, Angela has extensive experience teaching both private and group clarinet lessons. In addition to maintaining a private clarinet studio, Angela is a Faculty Mentor for the Harmony Program of New York, where she works with various teachers and students at sites in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Lower Manhattan.

    She received a B.A. in Clarinet Performance and Music Education from Carnegie Mellon University and an M.A. in Clarinet Performance from the Eastman School of Music, where she received the Performer’s Certificate, the highest prize in performance. While at Eastman, Angela also won both the Jack L. Frank Award for Excellence in Community Teaching and the Teaching Assistant Prize for her work as an educator, additionally earning an Arts Leadership Certificate for her work in arts administration.

    Angela has enjoyed working with the Binghamton Philharmonic, New Yorker Ensemble, Phoenix Ensemble, the Mobile Symphony Orchestra, the Ohio Light Opera Company, the International Opera Theatre Company of Italy, the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, the Point Chamber Orchestra, the Syracuse Symphony, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's Chamber Ensemble. She has performed at La Fenice in Venice, the United Nations, the Library of Congress, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Carnegie Hall.

    Beyond performing and teaching, Angela serves as Director of Performing and Educational Events for In The Pocket NYC, a collective of teaching musicians who have come together to help invigorate New York City’s Arts Education Community with benefit events, innovative performances, and exceptional music instruction.

    In July, 2014, and in June, 2012 Angela was invited to Sweden to perform as a Guest Artist with Quartet Kalos and Ensemble Evolution as part of the Double It Tour and the Midnight Sun Music Festival. Quartet Kalos reunited in Boston and New York for the Kalos Inscriptions tour in August 2015. In May 2012, Angela premiered “Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra,” dedicated to her by composer Seth Bedford, with the Chelsea Symphony.
