At the School of Drama, directors engage in the imaginative exploration of classic texts and the development of new plays, performance pieces, and films. Interrogating a wide range of styles, genres, and approaches to making theater, directors hone and synthesize their technical and creative skills. Coursework includes story analysis, interpretation, collaborating with writers and actors, acting, theater history, creative technology, production and design, and adaptation. Directors present their work in studios, in nontraditional venues, and in mainstage productions.

With New York City as its backdrop, the directing program offers the opportunity to work with some of the most exciting and acclaimed guest artists in the world. Directing students graduate with deep artistic relationships to writers and actors and significant connections to the professional community.

Because we believe that the best theater emerges from an intelligent and passionate fusion of writing, directing, and acting, we are committed to the art and skills of collaboration and are the only MFA program that integrates an ongoing class with actors, writers, and directors through all six semesters.
