• The requirements for the BA/BFA dual degree at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts and the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music are outlined below.

    The required 180 credits consist of liberal arts credits (for reading, writing, and discussing ideas) and studio credits (for creative and artistic work).

    Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts

    In order to earn the BA, you must:

    • Earn 90 liberal arts credits
    • Complete the course Writing the Essay I (also completing Writing the Essay II is recommended)
    • Declare and complete a major
    • Complete a senior capstone seminar or project (4 credits)

    The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music

    In order to earn a BFA, students must:

    • Earn 90 studio credits
    • Complete or test out of the following courses: Music Fundamentals, Piano, Rhythmic Analysis, and Sight-Reading
    • Complete and pass a technique jury
    • Complete and pass a sight-reading jury
    • Complete and pass a repertoire jury
    • Complete and pass a senior recital

    Students in the Jazz BA/BFA are required to take four music history courses (three credits each). A minimum of three music history courses must be taken at the College of Performing Arts; one may be taken at Lang. These courses apply as liberal arts credits.

    In addition, students must take one University Lecture course (ULEC), from the category (1) Tools for Social Change or (2) Introductions to Social Research, to fulfill the university-wide requirement for undergraduate students.
