The Gender Studies minor is offered through Eugene Lang
College of Liberal Arts.
In this interdisciplinary program, students look at the culturally constructed idea of sex difference in different contexts and the way gender and sexuality are renegotiated over time. Students explore the history of feminist thought and action; men's
studies; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender studies; and queer theory. Learn more about the Gender Studies program, and visit the Gender and Sexualities Studies Institute website, the intellectual home for New School scholarship, creative practice, and programming in the field of gender, sexualities, and LBGTQI studies.
Only specific courses satisfy requirements of the minor, including electives. See the university course catalog for fall 2023 Gender Studies courses that fulfill these requirements and consult with the program director when selecting them. Credit for internships requires approval of the Gender Studies director. The minor in Gender Studies requires completion of five to six courses, distributed as shown below, totaling a minimum of 18 credits.
*Options include the Senior Capstone. For the capstone, choose from an advanced seminar or eligible graduate course, an independent project, a collaborative independent project, and an internship.
Students must receive a grade of B or better in all courses taken to fulfill the minor. If you took a course that is not included in this list and believe it should count toward your minor, please contact the Gender Studies departmental faculty advisor.
Minors are available to undergraduate students across The New School. Please meet with your Student Success advisor to discuss how a minor will fit in with your overall degree requirements. If you have additional questions about requirements for the Gender Studies minor that cannot be answered by your Student Success advisor, please consult McKenzie Wark, Gender Studies Program Director and Departmental Faculty Advisor, at [email protected].
