Refund calculations are applied to the reduction in credits that occurs after a course is dropped, not to the difference in tuition. This has no effect on tuition charged per credit only, but it does affect tuition charged using a flat rate. Full-time students charged a flat-rate tuition whose credits drop below the full-time credit load might not receive a tuition refund under certain circumstances. Students who meet these criteria may want to contact Student Accounts in advance to discuss the implications for their account. Financial aid may be affected.

Please note that if you have paid by credit card and are eligible for a refund because of overpayment, course cancellation, or withdrawal, you will receive a credit back to the credit card used to make the initial payment. If you have paid by wire transfer and are eligible for a refund, it will be refunded through PayMyTuition, our wire payment and wire refund service. Students do have the option of leaving the excess credit from a wire transfer or credit card payment in their account to apply to a future term. They should contact Student Accounts at [email protected] to make these arrangements.

All other refunds are processed as checks and are mailed to the student's attention at the official address on file with the Registrar's Office if direct deposit has not been specified. Failure to complete payment before withdrawal does not relieve a student of financial liability.

We encourage students who are expecting a refund to sign up to receive their refunds electronically. This will expedite the refund process, since the funds are deposited directly to the (domestic) checking or savings account specified. The funds are typically available to the student within two to three business days from the time when the refund is processed. The student must have an active checking or savings account in a U.S. bank. The process takes only a minute to complete. We advise you to have a check or bank statement handy, as you will need to enter your bank account and routing numbers.

How to Sign Up

1. Log in to my.newschool.edu. You will be defaulted to the Services tab.
2. Scroll down to the Student Account box, and click Sign-Up to Receive Refunds Electronically.
3. Click the Refunds tab at the top.
4. Click the Set Up Account link.
5. Select account type (U.S. savings or U.S. checking account; refunds cannot be issued to debit cards).
6. Input the payment information; then scroll down and click Continue.
7. Verify that all information is correct. Check Agree and click Continue.
8. Once you are finished, you can verify that you have completed the steps correctly by clicking on Myaccount.
9. Click on Myprofile. The payment method should be listed under Saved Payment Methods.
10. Click Yes under "Account is used for refunds."

An email notification is sent to the New School email address whenever a refund is processed.

Not all students expecting a refund are eligible to receive it electronically. Parent borrowers of students using a Parent PLUS Loan to finance their educational expenses receive paper refund checks. Refunds for payments made by credit card or wire transfer are issued in the form in which the payment was originally made. Any credits remaining on a student account resulting from payments made with checks, or federal aid can be refunded by paper check or direct deposit.

Refunds for excess funds from loans are not processed until the loan funds have been disbursed to students' accounts. Students expecting a refund check for their living expenses should have funds for at least one month's living expenses available before the start of classes to cover their expenses until the refund check arrives by mail or electronically.

• Refunds are not issued prior to the last day of the add/drop period (Student Accounts does not offer students advances).
• Eligibility to receive a refund and the refund amount for a course depend on the length of the course and the actual withdrawal or drop date.
• Refund processing can take up to four weeks.
• A Parent PLUS loan refund is processed as a check and issued to the parent who applied for the loan (unless the parent borrower has authorized other arrangements).
• Students who have had a registration change (i.e., adding or dropping classes) may experience a delay with their refund.
• Student Accounts' policy for check payments is to wait 15 days for checks to clear before issuing refunds.
• Students cannot pick up their refund checks.
• For any lost or misplaced checks, please email Accounts Payable. Be sure to include your name, your student ID number, the amount of your refund, and a telephone number in case the office needs to contact you.
• Arrangements can be made with Student Accounts to have a credit on your account applied to a future term. Please email us at [email protected].

The refund calculation for a student receiving Title IV funds who withdraws officially or unofficially from all classes is based on the amount of Title IV funds earned, which is based on the amount of time the student has been in attendance. It is a proportional calculation through 60 percent of the payment period. This calculation is not related to the student's institutional charges. The amount assessed for tuition, fees, housing, and meal plans is based on the institutional refund policy, which is listed here and in your school's bulletin.

A refund is granted only after the official withdrawal procedure has been completed or the university determines that the student is no longer enrolled. Refund processing can take up to five weeks.
