A Board Game Designed to Confront the Climate Crisis
Can a board game educate people about the climate crisis and help them learn about creating sustainable systems? Ryann Abunuwara, a student, earning a degree in Product Design and Environmental Studies, and a team at The New School’s Urban Systems Lab think so. Designed by Abunuwara, Chris Kennedy, and Claudia Tomateo, EKOS challenges players to create systems that can be sustained through crisis situations. The play alternates between the competitive
and the collaborative, which Abunuwara believes makes it very “applicable to the real world…. One minute you’re against somebody, and the next minute you’re going to have to work with them.” Abunuwara and the team designed EKOS with college students
and educators in mind but believe the game has value for a broader audience and are focused on making it accessible to the global community.
