    Scott Thornbury

“At The New School, we were well-positioned to design an MA TESOL that really addressed the needs of teachers scattered all around the world—at time when the whole notion of English was tipping away from the native speaker model of English and toward English as a global language, English as an international language, English as a lingua franca," says Scott Thornbury, who teaches at The New School's Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Master's Program (MA TESOL). "So it's a much more social, cultural, political view of English than a purely linguistic one—and I think that’s the difference.”

Thornbury (MATEFL, with distinction, University of Reading, UK), a native of New Zealand who now lives in Spain, is currently series editor of the Cambridge Handbooks for Teachers series. He has been a prolific writer of books and articles for teachers and students and a tireless presenter at international ELT conferences, sharing the knowledge gained from his more than 30 years of experience as a teacher, teacher trainer, and CELTA and UCLES examiner.
