His first job was at The New Yorker magazine, and later he taught at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. For the last years of the writer Bernard Malamud’s life, Dunn was his personal assistant. He also worked on the editorial side of Sports Illustrated magazine, and currently is an Associate Professor in the Writing Program at The New School University in New York City.

In the last decade, Dunn has returned to photography. He has had work exhibited at the International Center of Photography, and his photobooks (OWS, Angel Parade, Meeting Robert Frank, New York Street, and A Carnival of Souls) are in the permanent libraries of the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, and the New York Public Library.
