The word zscalo is a Spanish term used to refer to the main plaza of a Mexican town. Such plazas become a great place to gather and socialize, with many different restaurants and shops and varied forms of entertainment. Locals and tourists are naturally drawn to them. Naming this market and green space in Nolita Zscalo was a way of bringing a little bit of Mexican culture into the identity of the site. It serves as a perfect way of describing the two programs coming together to make the site the main plaza of the neighborhood of Nolita. See more on issuu .
