The Invisible Labor Org.
Much of what goes on in the workplace remains unnoticed and unrecognized and, thus, unregulated. The Invisible Labor Organization is designed to create momentum to make basic rights and equity for workers the new norm. In this space, everyone will be seen, every story will be shared, and every worker will be noticed.
The question of permanence is explored in the interior through the creation a series of transformative spaces. A scaffolding system, evoking the New York City street aesthetic, is used to create three types of spaces: a gallery, for exhibitions open to the public; workshops for laborers; and workspaces for the organization’s employees. The reconfigurable nature of scaffolds enables storytelling about the interactions between occupants and environments, invisible workers and society, artists and audience, and government and citizens.
This project is rooted in the idea that interior design can play a role in making labor visible and that spending time in a stimulating, inclusive environment can help workers contemplate different futures, in which anything is possible.
