    Where the Two Seas Meet

In this project, we explore the coexistence of nature, spirituality, and industry by creating a technological landscape where water desalination infrastructure merges with residential structures. The design suggests a future in which machines have become an intimate part of our daily lives and the environment around us, forming the walls, roofs, and other parts of our habitat.

Water scarcity has emerged as a central challenge for many parts of Greece. For Gyali and its neighboring islands, the problem has been addressed through a passive desalination system. The system not only extracts and purifies seawater but symbolically restores the island’s capacity to provide—giving Gyali a new purpose and meaning and bringing new life to the island.

The main material used to construct the site is pumice, the island's primary resource. The use of pumice, in the form of pumice concrete, anchors the architecture in the island’s material identity. The material is also used for water filtration in the desalination process.

Drawing on Greek mythology, we used Poseidon and his trident as a guiding metaphor in the design. The angular, fractured terrain suggests the shape of the trident, while the production of clean, drinkable water from the environment recalls the trident's magical ability to bring forth water from the earth. The terrain is both tranquil and visually chaotic, mirroring the dual essence of humans and nature.

The resulting landscape is both functional and monumental—its scale, form, and materiality echo the mythical and geological forces that shaped Gyali. The effects of human activity on the island are preserved for future generations. The landscape is both a sacred place and an industrial site, where function, myth, and monumentality converge in a new, hybrid system.
