  • A Visuo-Spatial Journey with Light

    Advising
This project creates a visuo-spatial environment for schoolchildren within the autistic spectrum. It utilizes lighting to help acclimate autistic children to the school environment, allowing for a smoother transition and providing stimuli that acts as a learning experience to autistic children and slowly familiarizes them to the school environment. Using PS 19 – Asher Levy School in New York’s East Village as the site of experimentation, this project focuses on the public spaces—in particular hallways—to develop lighting design interventions such as viewing respites, which feature niches with small gardens, and walls embedded with soft colored guiding lights. In addition, indirect lighting lowers the potential for glare and minimizes flicker discomfort.
