    Dania Weinraub
My final service design for the Sustainable Systems course consists of a coat, the initial offering of a brand I hope to create, in which materials are recycled to produce affordable ready-to-wear pieces that can be worn by anyone. I’ve been inspired by old quilts and textiles since childhood, having grown up with a mother who loved to collect antiques. Drawing on this inspiration and my dislike for both fast fashion and luxury fashion, I decided to take a new path. For the project I bought nothing new. I used thread I already had, not caring what color I used, resisting the “buying new” culture we live in. For the outside of the coat I used secondhand materials—scraps and pieces of old quilts, vintage patches I collected as a child, buttons my aunt gave me, vintage crochet potholders from which I made pockets attached to the belt. For the lining I used a bedspread I found at Goodwill.
