  • One Child, One Fish, One World

    Advising
My thesis collection recalls my childhood under the one-child policy instituted in China during the 1990s. As the only child in my family, I was beloved and was spoiled by my mother. The collection is designed to show how my mother has been devoting her attention and love to me for years, how she's always given what she thinks is best for me, making me feel as if I owned the whole world. Inspired by my childhood, all textiles are handcrafted and delicately designed to illustrate the way that, since I was very young, my mother has spent a lot of time taking care of me with her whole heart. Colors are boldly used to depict the happy and memorable time I had with her. Fish are also used in my collection to wish for a better life for my family. In Chinese, the pronunciation of fish is as same as that of extra. People often hope at the end of each year that their families will have extra amounts of wealth, health, and happiness. I use fish in one of the looks to make my collection more fun and youthful. The collection is intended to thank my mother for all she has done for me.
