Richard is a native New Yorker and a graphic designer with broad and comprehensive experience in brand identity, package design and environmental graphics. His design philosophy is that packaging plays a central part in enabling the consumer to make an educated decision to buy or not to buy a product in a matter of seconds. Some of his clients include the Nestlé Corporation, Masterfoods/M&M, Johnson & Johnson, The Scotts Company and Merck & co. Additionally, Richard was a Design Project Manager with the Colgate-Palmolive Company's Global Oral Care Design Group. He has served as a judge of package design competitions for the Fragrance Foundation and the Clio Awards; organized and coordinated seminars for the One Club/Art Directors Club, AIGA/NY and the Package Design Council.
A member of the faculty of Parsons since 1988, Richard was twice awarded the Communication Design Department Award for Teaching Excellence and served for six years as Chairman of the Parsons Part-time faculty committee on the University Faculty Senate.
He created the winning brand identity for the New School's IT Central in a competition of 1,000 emtries. Several of his students have made successful careers, founding their own design firms in branding and package design.
In his career, Richard has created on-air graphics for CBS Network News; designed and illustrated books for Time-Life Books; served as an art director at Newsweek; was Creative Director for eleven years at Graphics II, a multidisciplinary design firm.
Richard worked with Seymour Chwast at the celebrated Push Pin Studios on package design, editorial graphics for TIME magazine and posters for PBS.
Additionally, he designed identities for John Deere and Chase Bank; created packaging for Faberge, Nine West, English Leather, Frito-Lay and Godiva; designed promotional literature for the New York Mets Diamond View Suites and the American Stock Exchange; worked as Senior Graphic Director with the CDI Group, an international retail design firm, designing identity, environmental & retail graphics and packaging for Exxon/Mobil, Texaco, Stop & Shop, Maidenform, among others;
