    Profile

Dr. Jessica R. Metcalfe (Turtle Mountain Chippewa) received her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and her PhD in American Indian Studies, with an emphasis on art, education, and culture, from the University of Arizona. She wrote her doctoral dissertation on Native American designers of high fashion, a project that would steer her towards a lifelong journey working with Native American artists.

In 2009, she launched the Beyond Buckskin blog in an effort to share her research online with people outside of academia. Interest in the blog grew and led to the development of a business, the Beyond Buckskin Boutique, which launched online in 2012.

She has taught courses in American Indian studies, studio art, art history, and literature at various higher education institutions. She has presented her research at national conferences, lectured at museums, and co-curated exhibitions. Her current work focuses on Native American art, clothing, and design from all time periods, with an emphasis on contemporary artists.
