Profile
Andrea De Toledo is an Associate Professor of English Language Studies at The New School, where she has taught English and critical reading and writing for multilingual students since 2002. In addition to her work at The New School, she teaches in the Humanities and Media Studies Department at Pratt Institute. Her professional experience includes extensive work in teacher education and curriculum development in both Brazil and the United States.
Andrea’s teaching is grounded in the understanding that language is a form of social action—relational, political, and deeply connected to identity, community, and lived experience. Drawing on critical pedagogy, raciolinguistics, anti-colonial approaches and a commitment to relational accountability, she cultivates classroom spaces where students can explore how language, culture, and power shape their everyday lives.
In her courses, students engage with literature, media, and contemporary issues through dialogue, reflection, and critical inquiry. Whether engaging with cultural texts, lived experiences, or questions of identity, power, and representation, she encourages students to consider how stories and systems of power impact different communities. She invites learners to reflect on their own linguistic and cultural experiences, recognizing both shared connections and meaningful differences as sources of insight, agency, and possibility.
Andrea Lives in Brooklyn with her family.
