Assistant Professor of Fashion
Francesca Sammaritano received her BFA Degree in Fashion Design from Parsons in 1989; and has worked as a fashion designer and part-time adjunct professor at Parsons since 1992. She later became full time faculty at Parsons in 2007 and has served as a Curriculum Coordinator for the BFA senior year thesis as well as teaching Creative Technical Studio: Thesis 5 and 6 and Integrated Studio 5 as well as six courses specializing in Childrenswear and Womenswear. In her role as student liaison, Francesca established the Parsons Fashion Council which has kept her closely involved with the student body.
In 2015 she was granted academic leave to work on her project of writing the textbook: Fashion Design for Childrenswear a practical guide to the fundamental principles of fashion, life and culture around children’s wear.
In fall 2016, Francesca was appointed to the role of Associate Director for AAS Fashion Design. In January 2018 she was appointed as Program Director of the AAS FD.
Her core focus on couture has led to her leadership on external curricular collaborations such as the Norman Norell project. This partnership included researching the history, heritage and legacy behind the designer and interpreting this through a modern couture approach, practice and development. The winning garment was produced and featured in the 2017 Neiman Marcus Holiday Catalogue.
She is currently leading the Christobal Balenciaga project: The Revolution of the Silhouette. Students have produced their garment using Balenciaga’s couture and tailoring techniques while understanding fabric qualities as a basis for their research and inspiration. Selected student’s work will be presented in an exhibition in the Christobal Balenciaga Museum, in the brand’s birthplace of Getaria, Spain from May 2018.
Professionally she has worked as a designer, product development consultant, and creative director for various fashion companies including Donna Karan Company, Calvin Klein, London Fog, Halston Baby and Rock Star Baby.
