    The College of Performing Arts and The New School are proud to host The Stone, an artist-centric home and community for experimental and avant-garde artists. With concerts every Tuesday through Saturday evening, The Stone at The New School carries forward the tradition of the landmark nonprofit performance space founded in 2005 by artistic director John Zorn.

    Martha Graham Dance Company

    The Mannes Orchestra and the iconic Martha Graham Dance Company enjoy a rich collaboration, joining forces for performances at New York City Center. Mannes Orchestra students perform together with the Graham company, presenting seminal Graham works such as Night Journey, Cave of the Heart, Panorama, The Embattled Garden, Appalachian Spring and The Rite of Spring.

    New York Choral Society

    Mannes Orchestra music director David Hayes has cultivated a vital partnership between the Mannes Orchestra and the renowned New York Choral Society, which he also directs. The New York Choral Society and Mannes Orchestra have come together for a number of concerts, including performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Hindemith’s When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom’d, and John Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls.

    JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra

    Mannes conducting students participate in a unique full-immersion apprenticeship with the Buffalo Philharmonic, attending rehearsals and artistic meetings and serving as cover conductors under the mentorship of Philharmonic music director and Mannes alumna JoAnn Falletta. The apprenticeship culminates with participating students leading the Buffalo Philharmonic in a public performance.

    Montclair Orchestra

    For many years, Mannes students have participated in the Montclair Orchestra’s fellowship program. Founded by Montclair music director David Chan, who is also Metropolitan Opera Orchestra concertmaster and a Mannes faculty member, the program offers students the opportunity to perform alongside professionals from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, and other top orchestras.

    Marin Alsop and Alsop Family Foundation

    Baltimore Symphony Orchestra music director Marin Alsop and the Alsop Family Foundation have generously funded the Alsop Entrepreneurship Award, a prize awarded each year to Mannes students for innovative interdisciplinary projects, with the aim of promoting audience outreach in 21st-century classical music.

    Orchestra of St. Luke's

    Mannes students have the opportunity to participate in the Orchestra of St. Luke’s Chambership Mentorship Program, in which they benefit from professional development workshops as well as chamber music coachings led by Orchestra of St. Luke’s musicians. The program culminates each year with the presentation of the Young Artist Series at the DiMenna Center and other New York City venues.

    Frick Collection First Fridays

    Mannes chamber ensembles and soloists regularly perform at the Frick Collection in the museum’s First Fridays program, featuring free gallery access and lectures by museum educators and curators as well as musical and dance performances.

    Previous Partner Events

    In addition to benefiting from Mannes’ established ongoing creative partnerships, students also enjoy singular opportunities arising from the school’s connections to countless international artists and arts organizations. Here are just a few examples.

    Kaija Saariaho, La Chambre aux échos and International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE)

    Mannes musicians in collaboration with the Paris-based company La Chambre aux échos and International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) presented the U.S. premiere of renowned composer Kaija Saariaho’s La Passion de Simone at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater.

    Czech Center New York: European Literature Night

    The Mannes Sounds Festival partnered with Czech Center New York in presenting a European Literature Night event at Bohemian National Hall. More than ten new works written by Mannes Composition students were premiered at the event. The evening also included a gallery show featuring works by students from Parsons School of Design and readings of contemporary literature by students of the School of Drama at The New School.

    PUBLIQuartet and the Metropolitan Museum of Art

    Mannes musicians participated in a conductorless orchestra led by the innovative string ensemble PUBLIQuartet in a performance of works by living composers at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Mannes’ association with The Met dates to its earliest days, when founder David Mannes led a phenomenally popular program of free concerts in the Great Hall.)

    Todd Reynolds and Bang on a Can

    Mannes musicians performed John Cage’s Atlas Eclipticalis under the direction of groundbreaking violinist, composer, and technologist Todd Reynolds at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in Bang on a Can: Music Among Friends @ MOMA.

    Frederica von Stade and Lincoln Center

    As part of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook Series, Mannes opera singers and orchestral musicians joined legendary mezzo-soprano (and Mannes alumna) Frederica von Stade at Rose Hall in a performance of Ricky Ian Gordon’s chamber opera A Coffin in Egypt.
