    Profile

Erin Johnston is currently completing her Ph.D. in Music Theory at the CUNY Graduate Center. She holds both a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Music in Music Theory from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. Erin’s dissertation combines her passion for singing with her interest in late-Romantic music, focusing on the influence of voices and vocality in Mahler’s early symphonies. Her earlier research has explored musical form in the Classical and Romantic periods. Erin’s research has been presented at the Music Theory Society of New York State and the South Central Society for Music Theory.

A dedicated educator, Erin has taught courses in Popular and Classical Ear Training, Popular and Classical Harmony, and Music Theory Fundamentals at the City College of New York and McGill University. She currently teaches Music Theory at The New School's Mannes School of Music and Aural Skills at New York University. In addition to her various teaching roles, Erin is an active member of the development team for the GC Music Teaching Hub, an online repository of open educational resources created by and for CUNY graduate student teachers. She also serves as a Graduate Fellow for the Office of Career Planning and Professional Development at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she supports fellow students in their career development.
