    Debra Vanderlinde, soprano, enjoys guiding young singers as they utilize classical singing techniques to build strong, handsome and flexible voices. Her singing career has included soloist work in opera, operetta, oratorio, symphony concerts, recitals, recordings and commercials.  Ms. Vanderlinde has maintained a private voice studio in New York City for thirty years and has served on the voice faculty of Teatro Nuovo Young Artists Program, Bel Canto at Caramoor, SUNY Purchase, Drew University, The 92nd St. Y School of Music and Marymount Manhattan College.  She has served as a judge for the Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions in Boston and New York, and the International Singers Competition as well as NATS and NYSTA competitions.

    Performances and Appearances

    Debra Vanderlinde, known for her “pure” and “radiant” singing, has appeared in concert and opera throughout the United States and made her European debut in 1988 with the Iceland Symphony.  After her debut in opera as Zerbinetta in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos at Chautauqua, she went on to sing with the New York City Opera, Wolf Trap, Chattanooga Opera, and many regional companies.  Ms. Vanderlinde sang Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore in concert at the Kennedy Center and also appeared there in Mahler and Beethoven songs with orchestra, accompanying the Feld Ballet. An appearance on the New Horizons Series at the 92nd St. Y marked her New York recital debut with Brian Zeger, pianist, and she has also appeared in recital at Yale’s Early Instrument Collection in a concert of Loewe and Mendelssohn songs accompanied by Will Crutchfield.   She sang the title role in Rudolf Friml’s Rose-Marie in a revival and recording at the Smithsonian Institution and won critical praise for her portrayal of Oriana in Handel’s Amadigi with the Connecticut Early Music Festival, a role she reprised in the spring of 1999 at Caramoor’s Music Room.  Other symphonic appearances include the Rochester Philharmonic, Baltimore and New Haven Symphonies, as well as the Caramoor Festival Orchestra.  Ms. Vanderlinde was a featured soloist at Windham Chamber Music Festival’s Gala Opening Concert.

    Recently Ms. Vanderlinde has collaborated with soprano Marguerite Krull in duo recitals along with pianists Dan Franklin Smith, Craig Ketter and Milos Repecki, in repertoire ranging from passionate 19th century art song and opera duets to charming Victorian parlor songs, French mélodies and songs from the golden age of American musical theatre

    The Art of Listening
    Ms. Vanderlinde developed her Art of Listening course for advanced singers at Mannes College of Music in 2009, and also offers the class privately, geared to each student’s repertoire interests.  The class explores the style, technique and dramatic delivery of artists from the dawn of recorded sound to the present day, with emphasis on recordings made between 1902 and 1940.
