Professors, research scholars, and short-term scholars in J status must receive authorization before beginning on or off campus unless the employment is already listed on their initial DS-2019. See the work authorization handout.

Working without authorization is a major violation of J-1 status.

Types of employment that professors, research scholars, and short-term scholars may engage in are occasional lectures and short-term consultations.
