The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office welcomes you and is here to help you understand how to maintain your non-immigrant status while at The New School.
You have applied for an I-20 or DS-2019, received an F-1 or J-1 visa, and entered the United States. Although you have entered the United States successfully in your appropriate visa status, you must follow certain regulations in order to keep and maintain your visa status. Your status is related to your purpose or reason for coming to the United States. As an F-1 or J-1 student or scholar, you are subject to certain regulations; as long as you follow them, with our guidance, you will be able to maintain status.
When you enter the United States, a Customs and Border Protection officer will stamp your passport with "D/S" (duration of status). Your status is tied to regulations that govern your stay in the United States. Failure to abide by those regulations will result in the loss of your non-immigrant status. ISSS provides information on how to maintain your status and offers other forms of assistance in your adjustment to life at The New School.
Designated school officials (DSOs) for F-1 students and alternate responsible officers (AROs) for J-1 students and scholars are school employees who help you maintain your status and update your SEVIS record. While your academic advisor advises you about your academic status at The New School, a DSO or ARO provides support and guidance in matters related to your immigration status.
