Institute
The Gender and Sexualities Studies Institute (GSSI) is the intellectual center for people working in the fields of gender, sexualities, and LGBTQI+ studies, providing a home for diverse forms of scholarship, creative practice, and public programming.
Co-founded by Chiara Bottici, professor of philosophy, and Lisa Rubin, interim executive dean of the Schools of Public Engagement and associate professor of psychology, GSSI brings together faculty and students across the university teaching in or
completing the Gender and Sexuality Studies graduate certificate and the Gender Studies undergraduate minor, as
well as those researching or teaching or taking courses in the history of feminist thought and action; masculinity studies; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender studies; and queer theory.
GSSI honors The New School’s history as a groundbreaker in the field of gender studies while supporting new initiatives, including events and symposiums for those working on relevant topics, and connecting students with scholarships, job opportunities,
and research mentorship.
