Dissertation Abstract
Charles is a doctoral candidate in anthropology and history at The New School for Social Research. His research focuses on how race and religion are conceptualized as inheritable and the forms of knowledge and matter that are enlisted in this pursuit. In particular, his dissertation explores the "return to Sepharad" in contemporary Spain by immigrants, converts, and the state in an effort to understand how the inclusion—however uneven and contradictory—of Jewish people and history reconfigures debates about the nature of personhood, history, and the vexed conditions of European multiculturalism.
