  • Concerns Overview

Faculty, staff, students, and community members have a range of methods for sharing and resolving concerns at The New School. Who to contact varies depending upon your affiliation and the category of concern. On this page, while not exhaustive, we include some of the most common student, staff and faculty concerns as well as where to go to get more detailed information.  You can navigate to the appropriate section, find the kind of concern you have, and be routed to appropriate contacts and relevant policies at The New School.

The university Ombuds is available to all community members as a resource for any type of concern.

Further, the Student, Staff, and Faculty Senates exist as the formal advocacy bodies for their respective constituencies.

Unionized staff (PT faculty, staff, and student employees) must follow the grievance and arbitration process or other mechanisms in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Students

Besides directly reaching out to the appropriate office, students can submit requests in Stellic for referrals of concerns to the appropriate office.

  • Full-time Faculty

Full-time Faculty concern procedures (related to areas including reappointment, promotion, teaching assignments, leave, etc.) are defined in the Full-Time Faculty handbook.

  • Staff

The Employee Grievance Policy is designed to supplement the informal departmental means of resolving employees' problems or complaints, unrelated to any complaint of employment discrimination. It may be used whenever an employee's efforts to solve the problem through discussion with the immediate supervisor have been unsuccessful. Human Resources is available to assist employees in the informal resolution of their grievances.

Union members register concerns through the procedures established in their collective bargaining agreements, rather than through the above methods.
