Update Your Personal Information

You can request a change in your legal name by completing the Change of Legal Name form and submitting it to the Registrar's Office by fax or email or in person. The form must be submitted with at least one supporting document—a certified court order, marriage license, divorce decree, Social Security card, or passport—reflecting your new legal name. All supporting documentation must be in English or be submitted with a certified English translation.

All official university documents, including but not limited to transcripts, verification letters, and diplomas, will reflect a student's legal name (as it appears on a legal or government-issued document such as a birth certificate, Social Security card, court order, or passport) after the change has been approved. Current or former students wishing to obtain replacements for their university documents with their changed legal name will need to so by requesting new copies or replacements of those documents (charges may apply).

Please note: Current international students on an F-1 or J-1 visa must submit an updated passport with their new name through the Document Upload request in iglobal.newschool.edu. Without this request in iGlobal, ISSS will not be able to update the student's name on their I-20 or DS-2019 and in the university's systems.

You can update your pronouns, gender, and preferred name at any time. In MyNewSchool under the Student Resources page, click on Student Information.  You will see a link to update your preferred name, pronoun, and gender link. This link will open up to a Banner self-service page where you'll see a field in which you can select your pronouns and gender and update your preferred first name. You can edit these fields at any time. You can find detailed instructions for making these updates here.

Please note that a preferred name will not be displayed on any legal documentation, including transcripts, bills or receipts of payment, tax documentation, financial aid paperwork, diplomas, verification letters, or I-20 documents.

Official Mailing Address
All students must have an official mailing address on file. The official mailing address is where all university mailings, including diplomas, are sent. Graduating students must submit an updated official mailing address if their address will change upon graduation, or they will not receive their diploma.

Permanent Address
All students must have a permanent address on file. For many students, the official and permanent address will be the same. Those who live at one address but have all university mailings (e.g., billing or diploma) sent to another address shoul use the permanent address as their home address and the official mailing address for all university mailings.

Local Address
The local address is considered a campus address. The U.S. government requires all international students, regardless of status, to report or update their local residential address within ten days of a move while attending The New School.

To update your personal email address, send a written request from your New School email to the Registrar’s Office at  [email protected].

Students can bring original legal documents in person to the Registrar's Office at 72 Fifth Avenue, second level, or submit a copy by fax to 212.229.5648.

The following are acceptable forms of documentation:

• Social Security card
• State ID
• Driver's license
• Birth certificate
• Passport
