University Learning Center

General writing appointments are available for writers at all skill levels. Tutors can help at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming ideas to developing an outline or rough draft to revising and editing. The ULC is primarily intended to support students with their academic work. In addition, we do also help with resumes, cover letters, interview practice, and creative works.

Graduate-level tutoring is available for students currently enrolled in a master's or PhD program. Tutors provide assistance with research papers, thesis and dissertation proposals, papers for publication, applications, and other written work. 

ESL-certified tutors provide support in writing, speaking, and pronunciation. For those seeking assistance with writing, tutors can help with grammar, content, structure, clarity, etc. ESL speech appointments are available for students looking to expand their vocabulary, improve their pronunciation, and practice presentations and daily conversation. Speech appointments also provide students with a valuable opportunity to enhance their listening skills. For ESL classes and additional services, refer to the Center for English Language Studies.

Software tutoring sessions are available for students who need help with Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, AfterEffects, Premiere, AutoCAD, Rhino, and other software programs. Tutors can help with layout, typography, color, typeface, etc. Online appointments take place through Zoom. Students are encouraged to bring their laptops for software sessions when the ULC is operating in person.

Computer programming sessions are available for students who need help with a variety of coding languages, including HTML/CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, Arduino, GitHub, Processing, Unity, and C++. Trained tutors can help you with the basics, works-in-progress, and other issues. Online sessions take place through Zoom. Students are asked to bring their laptops and any projects they are working on when the ULC is operating in person.

Math tutors can provide assistance with the following subjects:

• Calculus
• Economics
• Math merchandising
• Math tools
• Quantitative reasoning
• Statistics

Tutors can help with creating or refining presentation slides, developing talking points, or practicing delivering presentations. 

Individual Time Management appointments are available for students looking to better structure and plan their time. Tutors can help with managing short- and long-term assignments, budgeting time, creating an agenda (daily, weekly, etc.), and avoiding procrastination. Here is more information about our time management, ADHD support, and ADHD coaching offerings. 

The ULC offers two tutoring types for students with ADHD: 

ADHD Support
Trained tutors provide time management and executive functioning assistance to students with ADHD, with a focus on evaluating and helping them improve:

• How they schedule their day or week
• How they work on and complete assignments
• Self-care habits
• Communication and self-advocating skills, especially with professors, advisors, etc.
• Other factors affecting their school life and well-being

ADHD Support tutors will listen closely and help you come up with a tailored support plan, including setting goals and strategies for achieving them. They can also help you with coursework, such as writing assignments, reading strategies, and preparation for oral presentations. You can set up weekly or biweekly sessions with an ADHD Support tutor, which is recommended to keep you on track and provide a means to hold yourself accountable.

ADHD Coaching
ADHD Coaches do everything mentioned above but are also very well versed in the way ADHD manifests and affects people's daily lives. Additionally, they have more experience working with students with ADHD.

How to Make an Appointment During the Fall and Spring

• Go to WCONLINE.
• Click the Log In button. First-time users will need to register for an account. 
  • If you receive an error message during the single sign-on process, you may need to use an incognito/private browser or clear your cache.

Once you are logged in to WCONLINE, in the Find an Appointment box, select:

1. The preferred date and time
2. The specific tutor you would like to work with, if any
3. The subject you want to work on
4. Whether you want to meet online or in person

Then click "Find Appointments."

You can also schedule an appointment using the Calendar view. Click "View the Calendar Display" link under the Find Appointments button. Doing this will allow you to see all available appointments, so you won't have to search for specific times.

• To reserve one of the appointment options displayed, click the "Reserve" button.
• In the pop-up window, confirm the details of your appointment and click "Create Appointment."

You will immediately receive a confirmation to your New School email. Do not change your default email settings, or you will miss this and other important information.

If None of the Displayed Appointments Work for You

1. Click the "Start Over" button in the top right-hand corner to try another search or use the Calendar view (see instructions above).
2. Click the "Waiting List" button to add yourself to the waiting list to be notified if any appointments become available.
3. Email [email protected] to request a specific appointment time or to receive help in setting up an in-person appointment.

Current degree-seeking students can book one ULC appointment per day and three appointments per week and can book up to two weeks in advance.

How to Make an Appointment During the Summer
To schedule a by-request appointment, please email [email protected]. Please give at least three to five times you are available and let us know what you would like to work on and if there is a specific tutor you would like to work with.

A "walk-in" appointment happens when a student asks to meet with a tutor close to the appointment time, rather than booking an appointment in advance.

Students can request a walk-in session from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern by emailing [email protected]. Students will be accommodated if a tutor is open for the hour. 

Students can be seen for a walk-in session starting on the hour until 20 minutes past the hour. Walk-ins are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis depending on availability, so inquiring early increases your chances of meeting with a tutor.

Walk-in appointments are not available during by-request periods.

Students can request an appointment in which they meet with the same tutor at the same time either every week or every other week. This service is particularly useful for students working on longer assignments and those who plan to visit the ULC frequently throughout the semester.

Weekly appointments are limited to current degree-seeking students and alumni of degree programs.

Students can request a weekly appointment by emailing us. 

During the fall and spring, students will lose their weekly appointments if they cancel and/or miss an appointment three times.

During the summer, students will lose their weekly appointments if they cancel and/or miss an appointment two times.

Graduate students with particularly lengthy and/or challenging pieces of writing can schedule a two-hour appointment. Students must email us to request a two-hour appointment. Students who have not been to the ULC before are encouraged to first schedule a one-hour appointment before requesting a two-hour session, as a one-hour session is often sufficient. Students are limited to one additional appointment during the week in which a two-hour appointment takes place.

During the fall and spring, eligible students can have two two-hour appointments during a single semester. The University Learning Center is unable to schedule two-hour appointments during the last two weeks of the semester and on Saturdays, as there is higher demand for services during those times.

During the summer, eligible students can have five two-hour appointments during the summer by-request period.

The ULC offers a limited number of group appointments (with a maximum of two students working with a tutor per session) on a case-by-case basis. If you and another person are working on the same project and would like to work together with a tutor, please email your request to [email protected] with a short description of the project and days and times when you can meet. Please note that requests must be made at least one business day in advance.

To begin an online appointment:

1. Shortly before your appointment time, log into WCONLINE using a laptop or desktop computer.
   (Please log in to WCONLINE at least 24 hours before the appointment to ensure that you are able to access the site. The log-in for WCONLINE is the same NetID and password you use to log in to MyNewSchool.)
2. Under Today’s Appointments, click Open Appointment.
3. Click the red Join Your Appointment link in the appointment window.

Please keep your camera on and make sure you are in a quiet space.

Students should try to minimize background noise and activity during online sessions and must use headphones if they are not in a quiet space.

New School alumni are welcome to request our tutoring services. Alumni are graduates of a degree-seeking program at The New School. While we operate remotely, alumni can request appointments by email, and we will do our best to accommodate them. The maximum number of appointments alumni can have per week is two; two-hour sessions are not available, and no appointments will be available during the last two weeks of the semester. For same-day requests, email us to see if any walk-in sessions are available. To request an appointment for the current week, email us at least 24 hours in advance and provide at least three times when you are available.  

New School faculty and staff are welcome to request our tutoring services. "Faculty" is defined as instructors of current New School courses; "staff" is defined as current New School employees. While we operate remotely, faculty and staff can request appointments, and we will do our best to accommodate them. The maximum number of appointments faculty or staff can have per week is two; two-hour sessions are not available, and no appointments will be available during the last two weeks of the semester. For same-day requests, email us to see if any walk-in sessions are available. To request an appointment for the current week, email us at least 24 hours in advance and provide at least three times when you are available. 

Continuing education (CE) students are welcome to request our tutoring services. CE students are students enrolled in a Continuing and Professional Education course during the current semester. While we operate remotely, CE students can request appointments and we will do our best to accommodate them. For same-day requests, email us to see if any walk-in sessions are available. To request an appointment for the current week, email us at least 24 hours in advance and provide at least three times when you are available. CE students are limited to one appointment per week, but please note that appointments are not guaranteed. 

Join our weekly Conversation Group, with activities and games to expand your English speaking and listening skills and vocabulary. The groups are informal, so there is no need to sign up in advance. All we ask is that you come ready to participate and have fun (feel free to bring a snack)! The group meets at 66 West 12th Street in Conference Room 609  at 4:00 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: February 6, February 20, March 5, March 19, April 2, April 16, and April 30.

In this class, you will train your muscles to correctly produce sounds in English, learn where the stress falls in words and sentences, master correct intonation, learn to differentiate between similar sounds, and gain confidence in speaking.
