Online Learning

Online courses in the Adult Bachelor's Program are primarily asynchronous (students and instructors do not need to be online at the same time), so you can complete your assignments when it's most convenient for you. Instructors post texts, lectures, and other materials in Canvas, the online learning platform used by The New School, and assign papers and projects like any other course. You'll engage in dialogue with your classmates in an online discussion forum. Contact our admission office at [email protected] to set up guest access to an online course.

Studying online allows you to adapt your educational experience to your already full and busy schedule. While you will have weekly deadlines to meet, you'll be able to complete assignments, participate in discussions, and watch lectures on your schedule. In addition, the skills you gain through engaging in an online learning space prepare you to communicate effectively in the emergent online workplace.

Of all the majors offered, the following ones can be completed entirely online:

• Food Studies AAS
• Liberal Arts BA/BS
• Media Studies BA/BS
• Urban Studies BA

Other majors may require some courses on campus. International students studying in New York on a student visa are required to take a certain number of classes on-campus each term. Learn more about these requirements at International Student Services.

Yes. The majority of students take an online class at some point during their time at The New School. The ability to switch between online and on-campus study - whether to accommodate a new work schedule, a short-term project in another city, or moving to a new home - enables you to complete your degree. It's even common to mix online and on-campus during a single semester, for more control over your schedule.

Our faculty come to The New School to work with students who want to change the world. Some teach courses both online and on campus, and are supported by The New School to adapt their teaching style to an online platform. Students in the online community live and study across the United States and the world. Some online students live in the NYC area but due to their work schedules, family commitments, and travel plans, find online study to be a better option. Just as in the on-campus classroom, the online environment provides the opportunity to collaborate and engage with your classmates, who bring their own unique perspectives and stories into the classroom.

Yes, the degree is the same whether you earn it online or fully on-site at The New School. The New School is a non-profit institution that is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Online students receive the same benefits of studying at The New School as any other student - including financial aid opportunities, student services and support, and all other university resources. While online students are welcome to visit campus, it is not required.
