• General Degree Requirements

  • Within the Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students, The New School awards Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees (for graduates of the Integrated Program of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy) to students who successfully complete 120 credits of study as described below. Up to 84 credits may be transferred toward your degree requirements. 

    Below are the general requirements for each degree type in the Bachelor’s Program for Adults and Transfer Students. All students should consult with their advisor each semester to ensure they are on track to graduate. 

    • Bachelor of Arts students must complete at least 90 liberal arts credits and not more than 30 credits in non-liberal arts courses (defined as studio and practice-based courses and internships).

    • Bachelor of Science students must complete at least 60 liberal arts credits and not more than 60 credits in non-liberal arts courses.

    • Bachelor of Fine Arts students in Musical Theatre must complete at least 48 liberal arts credits and not more than 72 non-liberal arts courses. (The BFA Musical Theatre program is only for graduates of the AMDA integrated program.)  

    The 120-credit requirement must also include the following (consult an academic advisor for details on category requirements) :

    1. Pathways to Learning (NHUM 1001) (3 credits) is required of all students in the first two semesters of entering the program.

    2. One Introductory Subject Area course (3 credits) from our menu.

    3. One Practice-Based Research course(s) (3 credits) from our menu.

    4. One Reflection course(s) (1-3 credits) from our menu.


    One Data and Scientific Literacy course (3 credits) is required of students who have not done prior coursework in the areas of scientific literacy and quantitative reasoning.  This may be fulfilled by a University Lecture (ULEC) courses from category (i) or (ii) or from our menu.
